Renu Contact Solution Lawsuit

Those who wear contact lenses trust that the contact lens solution they use safely cleans and disinfects their lenses at the end of their day. The users of Bausch & Lomb's ReNu MoistureLoc contact lens solution are not as lucky. Some users are developing a fungus called "Fusarium" in their eyes after cleaning there contact lenses with ReNu, which can lead to loss of vision, and blindness.

As of April 9, 2006, 109 cases of suspected Fusarium keratitis are under investigation by CDC and public health authorities in 17 states of the U.S. They have recently removed the contact lens solution, from the market in the U.S., and are advising consumers to immediately stop using the contact solution.

A ReNu class action was filed against Bausch & Lomb within days of the company's voluntary withdrawal of the product from the market. The suit alleged that Bausch & Lomb knew about the possible connection between ReNu and the fungal infection, because cases had occurred in Asia in 2005. It goes on to argue that Bausch & Lomb had a responsibility to inform the public of the dangers of Fusarium keratitis it was discovered. Instead, the company waited several more months until the CDC released information in the U.S.

It is likely that many individual ReNu with MoistureLoc lawsuits for injury to the eye caused by Fusarium keratitis will be filed against Bausch & Lomb if the FDA inspections or further studies can show that ReNu actually caused the infections.
